Throughout my life I have enjoyed making images, whether they were doodles on paper, photographic reflections of the world around me or 3D models in plasticine or clay.
In some cases they have been photo-realistic, mirrored representations, in others I have allowed my imagination to wander more freely; to create new worlds or to find abstractions from the beauty of detail. I think that most of all I have enjoyed allowing myself to look and to see and to respond.
I have always particularly drawn inspiration from the world around me; delighting in the play of light on the landscape, the detail of texture, the possibilities of colour. Looking around me to share the unnoticed familiar.
And just as the world around us presents such a range of complexity and diversity as you look, and look again, so too does my response. For me, in trying to share my world there can be no one simple image, no one medium, no one interpretation. Even by presenting the most complex and comprehensive sets of responses, there would be room for more.
In this search for description, I find ceramics to be a wonderful tool - full of possibilities and potential - and I enjoy exploring those possibilities. Sometimes pushing at the boundaries of what it can do, sometimes using techniques refined over centuries; sometimes starting a piece with a clear vision, other times just letting the clay speak and the work evolve.
On the following pages I have tried to share some of my images and inspiration;
- Photographs that I have taken that begin the process of exploration or try to describe concept,
- Drawings and sketches that develop and refine my ideas and try to catch the fleeting visions of pieces constructed in my mind
- And then the ideas made solid; captured in clay and glaze.
I hope that you will enjoy this glimpse into my work.
